SENATE PASSES ENERGY BILL WITH 36 BILLION GALLON RENEWABLE FUELS STANDARD
POSTED: DEC 13, 2007

The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE), the nation's largest ethanol association with nearly 2,000 grassroots members nationwide, today issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate's passage of an energy bill by a vote of 86-8. The historic energy bill improves fuel economy standards for the first time in over 30 years and provides important growth to biofuels through a Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). The RFS is a national commitment to using an increasing amount of renewable fuels each year, calling for 15 billion gallons of ethanol to be consumed annually by 2015 and 36 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol to be consumed annually by 2022.

"This may be the most profoundly important step in support of energy security ever taken by the U.S., an unmistakable shift toward renewable fuels and energy conservation and away from our dangerous and expensive reliance on fossil fuels. On behalf of the American Coalition for Ethanol's nearly 2,000 grassroots members across the nation, I commend the United States Senate for passing its energy bill with a new, robust Renewable Fuels Standard that is a meaningful, immediate step toward energy security and economic stability for America. Our praise and thanks to the steadfast ethanol advocates in the Senate and to the Senate leadership for the bipartisan spirit demonstrated here, putting differences aside to take action on behalf of America's consumers who deserve more ethanol as a clean-burning, cost-effective choice at the pump," stated Brian Jennings, Executive Vice President of ACE.

The American Coalition for Ethanol was the first association to support the concept of an RFS a decade ago, and has been leading the effort for an increase over the current RFS schedule as set forth in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 - a 7.5 billion gallon per year minimum usage by 2012.

"The House's passage and the President's signing of this bill will signal the beginning of the end of our nation's addiction to oil. We urge the House to take swift action on this energy bill and urge the President to sign it into law so that U.S. consumers can begin benefiting from increased access to clean-burning, renewable fuels like ethanol," Jennings said.
